From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 24): PA joins nation in celebrating 28th anniversary of EDSA-1

The Philippine Army (PA) on Monday joins the entire nation in the 28th anniversary of the EDSA-1 People Power Revolution which will take place this Tuesday, fEB. 25.

The Army also recalled the pivotal role played by the Filipino people in the restoration of democracy.

Army commander Major Gen. Hernando DCA Iriberri will join Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief-of-staff, as the military hosts the annual celebration which will be held for the first time at the Provincial Capitol of Cebu City.

This will start around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

President Benigno S. Aquino III is the guest-of-honor and speaker.

The day's activities will kick off with a flag raising ceremony followed by the traditional "Salubungan".

The "Salubungan" is a re-enactment of the meeting of uniformed personnel and civilian contingents along EDSA during the historic People Power Revolution in 1986.

A wreath laying ceremony was also conducted at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, "Libingan ng mga Bayani" in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City last Feb. 24 with former President Fidel V Ramos, one of the key players in the 1986 bloodless revolt, as guest-of-honor.

"Today, the nationalism that the soldiers exemplified in 1986 continues to be a source of inspiration to the soldiers in protecting the very freedom and independence that they, together with the whole Filipino nation, have fought for," the former president said.
