From ABS-CBN (Jun 22): CAFGU killed in Sultan Kudarat clash
A member of the Civilian Auxiliary Unit of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (CAFGU) was killed in an encounter between the military and an armed group in Barangay Bagumbayan, President Quirino town, Sultan Kudarat on Friday morning.
Authorities said the clash occurred after the military was fired upon by around 100 lawless elements led by a certain Commander Carialan.
The killed CAFGU member was identified as Vicente Macaraeg.
A farmer, identified as Roy Viala, was also killed in the firefight.
Around 80 families fled their homes due to the clash.
Colonel Edmund Pangilinan, commander of the Army's 33rd Infantry Battalion, said fighting has been ongoing in the area for some time now due to land disputes.
