From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 30): 'Balikatan' field office in Nueva Ecija activated

The Nueva Ecija-based 7th Infantry Division announced that it has activated the "BK Combined Army Forces Field Training Exercise Headquarters" (CARFOR FTX HQS) in preparation for "Balikatan 2014".

Capt. Mark Anthony Ruelos, 7th Infantry Division spokesman, said this is in line with this year's combined military exercises.

"Balikatan" is an annual Philippines–US military bilateral training exercise and humanitarian assistance engagement.

“Balikatan” in Filipino means “shoulder to shoulder” which characterizes the spirit of the exercise.

It will take place in the Philippinesfrom May 5 to 16.

"Balikatan 2014" is the 30th iteration of the annual exercise.

This year, the Philippinesand the United Stateshave invited a number of personnel from other regional partner nations to attend a portion of the exercise.

During "Balikatan 2014", Philippinesand US service members will conduct humanitarian civic assistance projects throughout LegazpiCity, Albay.

Meanwhile, in FortMagsaysay, military medical personnel will offer free medical and other community infrastructure in selected communities.

"Balikatan" exercise focuses on training members of both Philippine and US Armed Forces to provide relief and assistance in the event of natural disaster and other crisis that will endanger public health and safety.

Additionally, military service members from both countries will conduct combined staff exercises and field training in Crow Valley in Tarlac; Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija and Clark Airfield in Pampanga to improve their interoperability and contingency planning.

The annual exercise is consistent with the Mutual Defense Treaty and Visiting Forces Agreement between the Philippinesand the US.

Both countries aim to continue each others commitment to train, share information and provide support.
