From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 4): Army troops repel NPAs in tri-boundary area

Troopers from the Army's 67th Infantry Battalion have successfully beaten off a New People's Army (NPA) extortion mission at the tri-boundary area of Agusan Del Sur, CompostelaValley and Davao OrientalThursday afternoon.

The clash took place around 1 p.m. This lasted for 20 minutes with no losses reported for the government side and undetermined number of wounded and killed for the NPAs.

Recovered were one M-16A1 automatic rifle, five improvised landmines, medical equipment, backpacks, and several extortion letters.

Capt. Ernest Carolina, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, the parent unit of the 67th Infantry Battalion, said the encounter occurred after a village of Simulao, Boston, Davao Oriental reported the presence of the armed group near the border area.

“We were able thwart their plans because of the timely report from civilians. People here are now for peace and development,” said 67th Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Colonel Krishnamurti Mortela.

“This province is now peaceful. NPAs are no longer welcome here," he added.

The encounter site last Thursday yielded invitations for the 45th anniversary of the NPA which took place last March 29.

Along with the invitations were unnamed letters “soliciting” amounts for the said celebration.

The letters, which were in the form of a template, explained how the rebel is waging a war for a “True Democratic Government of The People.”

The letter likewise indicated a choices between “donations” in three specified amounts -- P50,000, P80,000 and P100,000, respectively.
