From the Philippine News Agency (Mar 11): Military on heightened alert in Northern Mindanao
The military has thrown a region wide security dragnet as it moved to a heightened alert following an attack on a police outpost in the nearbyprovince of Davao Del Sur on Monday morning.
Capt. Christian Uy, spokesman of the army’s 4th Infantry Division, on Tuesday said the entire military and police forces inNorthern Mindanao were on full alert in anticipation of communist rebel attacks on military outposts in the region.
Uy said the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), will be commemorating its 45th founding anniversary on March 29, which usually preludes rebel attacks on military and police outposts.
Uy cited the attack on the Matanao Municipal Police Station in Davao Del Sur about 7:00 a.m. on Monday where two policemen were killed and three others wounded as the communist rebels desperate efforts to show their dwindling forces.
He said the communist rebels would always attack on military installations and the community of innocent civilians to pursue the group’s ideals of sowing terror.
The military, however, assures that the government troopers would always be around to secure the civilian community and its people, Uy added.
