From the Visayan Daily Star (Jan 13): NPA assassins kill Cafgu member
Suspected New People’s Army rebels struck again Friday at Purok 5 in Brgy. Magballo, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, killing a member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit, military and police said yesterday.
The victim was identified as CAFGU member Ricky Camacho, assigned at the Canlamay detachment in Ilog. He was shot and killed by five suspects, Senior Supt. Milko Lirazan, provincial police director of Negros Occidental said, quoting initial investigations of the Kabankalan police.
Lt. Col. Ariel Reyes, 47th Infantry Battalion commander, said that Camacho was unarmed and off duty, when he was shot by the suspects he believed to have been members of the NPA Special Partisan Unit.
Before they left, Reyes said the suspects shouted “Mabuhay ang NPA… Nakabawi na kami”.
In November last year, troopers of the 47IB figured in an encounter with about 25 NPA rebels in Sitio Pating, Brgy. Magballo, Kabankalan City, and a . 45 caliber pistol was recovered at the encounter site by pursuing government troopers.
Reyes said he believes that Camacho,42, was a target of opportunity, as he was shot in the back.
Suspected NPA hitmen also shot and injured newly-elected barangay chairman Fidel Aninon of Minautok in Calatrava in November last year, police records also showed.
Government troopers have been repeatedly warned by the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division against SPARU operations of the NPA in Negros island.
