From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 13): BIFF, ASG battle Army anew in Basilan

Joint forces of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Abu Sayyaf group, on Friday resumed its sporadic attacks in Basilan island, police said.

Reports reaching the police regional office here of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PNP-ARMM), said joint forces of the BIFF and Abu Sayyaf group, an extremist movement with links to regional terror group, fired at government forces in the outskirts of LamitanCity.

ARMM Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman, citing report from Lamitan City Mayor Eric Furrigay, said said gunfire could be heard at the town center.

No casualty from either side was reported so far as compared to Thursday when BIFF-ASG groups harassed Army and Scout Ranger detachments in Tipo-Tipo, an outskirt village of Lamitan City.

Chief Supt. Noel Delos Santos, ARMM police regional director, said after last Thursday's skirmishes that left three persons hurt, the rebels fled deep into the forest but returned Friday morning and attack Army positions around the city.

More troops have been deployed in Basilan's capital city to augment Army and Scout rangers already in the island.

Navy ships brought the soldiers from the military's 1st Infantry Division.

Hataman said the government forces are battling about 100 heavily armed bandits.
