From the Philippine News Agency (Sep 11): 2 MNLF 'bomb maker' detained at Cebu City jail not a security threat, exec says

The two suspected "bomb makers" of the separatist Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) who are currently detained at the Cebu City Jail do not pose a security threat to the city, an official said.

Jail warden Superintendent Johnson Calub made the assurance to the Police Coordinating and Advisory Council (PCAC), PCAC presiding officer Eugene Elizalde said.

Calub, he said, made the assurance after MNLF rebels mounted an attack in Zamboanga City.

At least 130 members of the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) 7 were flown in to Zamboanga City to augment government forces who are fighting against the Muslim rebels.

Elizalde said authorities do not think there is a possibility of a rescue operation by the colleagues of the jailed Muslim rebels and that the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is not asking for security assistance.

"Cebuanos need not worry especially since our Muslim brothers based here assured as that they are doing their best to help in preventing terror attacks from Muslim rebels," he said.

It was not clear whether the inmates belong to the Nur Misuari-led MNLF group or to the faction of Muslimin Sema.

Their names, Calub said, have been withheld.

Elizalde described the two inmates as "bomb makers" who are from Jolo where they were initially jailed but had asked the court for a transfer citing security concerns.
